This month’s issue of World Coal features a regional report on the Australian coal industry – an industry currently suffering a hangover after years of boom. Anthony Fensom reports on the current state of the industry, while articles from Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, The Ausimm and Norton Rose tackle the specific challenges of cost-reduction and productivity, human resources, social licence to operate and exploration. In the technical feature, we focus on longwall mining with articles looking at ventilation in longwall mines, low-seam and high-seam longwall mining and the challenge of gateroad development in high capacity longwall mines.

This month’s issue of World Coal features the Coal Preparation Buyers Guide 2013, our annual survey of the world’s leading OEMs in the fields of coal processing and handling. The issue also includes a range of technical articles on coal preparation issues, from size reduction to dewatering and the increasing popularity of modular preparation plants. The regional report focuses on the US – a market that has had its share of challenges over the past 12 months.
