Sibanthracite improves WWF rating of mining companies

World Coal,

In 2021, Sibanthracite moved up from 33rd to 17th place in the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-Russia ranking of environmental information transparency of mining and metallurgical enterprises. At the same time, Sibanthracite took the third place among the coal mining companies participating in the rating.

The final grade of Sibanthracite was 1.144 points – above the industry average of 0.92 points. The Group also received high marks for certain components of the rating.

The advancement of Sibanthracite in the WWF rating by 16 positions at once in Russia was a reflection of the Group's systematic work to improve the quality of environmental management and increase information transparency.

The official website of the Group regularly publishes up-to-date data on measurements of air quality, water and noise level in settlements near production facilities. On the recommendation of WWF experts, Sibanthracite developed and published on the website a set of key environmental performance indicators, which made it possible to compare the Group with other representatives of the coal industry. This data will be regularly updated and will form part of a comprehensive sustainability report that the Group plans to release next year.

The rating was also raised by the projects launched by the Group to certify the environmental management system in accordance with the ISO standard, measures to improve the energy efficiency of production and the transition to electricity from renewable sources.

Another important criterion that allowed us to take a high line in the rating is interaction with regional and municipal authorities, public organisations, local population and indigenous people in the regions of presence. Sibanthracite on a regular basis receives inquiries from citizens and provides objective answers, organises visiting public receptions, organises visits to enterprises and public measurements of environmental indicators.

“We are proud of the results we have achieved in this rating. This means that WWF experts and the Russian rating agency ACRA highly appreciated our efforts to protect the environment and increase information transparency. The vector of further work was chosen correctly. We will continue to implement measures aimed at the ecological well-being of the regions,” said Sergei Melnikov, CEO of Sibanthracite Group.
