BELAZ, one of the world's largest manufacturer of quarry equipment, has demonstrated to the delegation of the Eastern Mining Company and the Sakhalin government the operation of the first BELAZ-7530E dump truck in a diesel-trolley design.

For this, a testing ground for testing diesel trolley carriers with a trolley line with a total length of more than 400 m, 33 supports and a traction substation with a capacity of 1.8 MW was created at the production site in the Belarusian Zhodino. In the coming months, complex tests will be carried out on it, which will have to confirm the predicted performance indicators of the trolley modification of the dump truck.

Present was the Minister of Industry of the Republic of Belarus, Petr Parkhomchik, Chairman of the Government of the Sakhalin Region, Alexey Belik, General Director of OJSC BELAZ, Sergey Nikiforovich, as well as a representative of a potential customer of the first pilot batch of diesel trolleys, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vostochnaya Mining company, Oleg Misevra.

Presenting to the audience not only a diesel-trolley model, but also another development – an all-electric dump truck with storage batteries – Sergey Nikiforovich, General Director of OJSC BELAZ, noted: “The production of such machines is a promising direction in the development of BELAZ mining equipment, taking into account world trends in the use of alternative energy sources. The operation of the diesel trolley car helps to reduce emissions of harmful substances into the environment and improve the ecological situation in the quarries and adjacent regions. We offer comprehensive solutions for organising all the necessary infrastructure. And we believe that this approach will help our customers increase productivity and reduce transportation costs.”

Representatives of the state authorities of Russia and the Republic of Belarus who attended the event highly appreciated not only the scientific and technical, business, but also the environmental potential of the development. Petr Parkhomchik and Alexey Belik promised to make every effort to help the project to be realised, to become a shining example of mutually beneficial interstate cooperation.

The theme was also supported by the current key business partner of the project. Misevra, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Eastern Mining Company, one of the largest coal producers in the Far East, said: “We are now actively engaged in similar projects aimed at reducing our carbon footprint. As a potential interested customer, we try to be maximally involved in the development and testing of new items. We are actively discussing with the Belarusian side the pilot operation of the machine at our Solntsevsky opencast. I hope everything will work out with all-round administrative support.”

According to the preliminary agreements of the parties, in 2022 on the territory of the Solntsevsky coal mine in the Uglegorsk district of the Sakhalin region it is planned to build the appropriate infrastructure for carrying out comprehensive operational tests of diesel-trolley dump trucks. At the first stage, it is planned to build an experimental section of a trolley line with a length of 1.5 km, on which 5 – 6 such machines will operate. In the future, with the successful achievement of the declared technical and economic indicators, the possibility of expanding the experiment will be considered up to the complete transfer of the entire fleet of dump trucks.

Vostochnaya Mining Company is implementing the Green Coal Cluster project in Sakhalin. According to the company's plans, in the coming years, a full-fledged infrastructure will be created in the Uglegorsk region, which is key for VGK's business, to minimise the carbon footprint from production activities. This is fully in line with the region's global environmental initiative. The project will include the longest mainline conveyor in Russia for transporting coal from the open pit to the port (23 km), a wind farm with a design capacity of 67.2 MW. In addition, one of the strategic projects is to replace the fleet of BELAZ mining dump trucks with a carrying capacity of 220 t at the moment with an experimental model of a diesel trolley carrier.

This initiative of the company has already received the support of the Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation – Plenipotentiary of the President of the Russian Federation in the Far Eastern Federal District Yuri Trutnev, as well as the Governor of the Sakhalin Region Valery Limarenko.

“We fundamentally decided for ourselves that the Sakhalin Region should be an ecologically clean region. Therefore, we came up with the initiative to become an experimental platform for achieving carbon neutrality by 2025. And it is very important that the largest enterprise of the coal industry in the region, Vostochnaya Mining Company, is actively integrating into this experiment and is switching to environmentally friendly methods of coal mining and transportation,” said Limarenko.
