SNG contract for Johnson Matthey

World Coal,

Johnson Matthey Process Technologies has signed a contract with Suxin Energy Hefeng Co Ltd for the supply of licenced technology and catalysts for the new substitute natural gas (SNG) plant base in Tancheng, in the Xinjiang region of China. The plant will use coal from a new mine at the same site as feedstock and will produce 2 billion m3 /y of SNG.

The SNG plant is expected to begin operation in 2016. The gas produced will then be transported via the SINOPEC Xinjiang-Guangdong-Zhejiang pipeline, which when complete, will be the largest of its kind in the world. The pipeline will play an active role for economic development and energy-saving emission reduction of various provinces along its route from northwest to southeast China.

SNG is important for China as it allows abundant supplies of Chinese coal to be efficiently converted to clean-burning gas, improving overall energy security and leading to improvements in air quality in China’s cities.

Johnson Matthey
Johnson Matthey has used its global experience as a technology developer and licensor to support the growth of the SNG market in China through the provision of modern process technology and catalysts. The company’s success in the SNG market has been built on experience gained through use of its catalysts in the North Dakota coal-to-SNG plant.

The first Chinese SNG technology license was awarded to Johnson Matthey by Datang Energy and Chemical company in 2009. Since then, Datang has successfully commissioned its first plant and followed this with contracts with Johnson Matthey for three further plants. To date, Johnson Matthey has secured licence and catalyst supply contracts for a total of nine commercial SNG projects in China.

Suxin Energy Hefeng
Suxin Energy Hefeng is an integrated coal-based chemical enterprise largely engaged in the exploitation and operation of coal mines, development and construction of coal-based chemical projects, and production and sales of coal-based chemical products.
