Xinjiang to launch coal gasification project

Chinese authorities have announced a US$ 30 billion coal gasification project to be built in China’s Xinjiang region amid the country’s most prolific coal reserves.

The project, located in the Zhundong area, Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, will be one of the largest of its kind, with a capacity of 30 billion m³ annually. It will require 90 million tpy of coal, and will provide at least 18 000 jobs.

The facility will be a joint venture between the Chinese state oil and gas company Sinopec, the Huaneng Xinjiang Energy Development and other energy companies in the region.

The coal gas will be transported to booming provinces of Zhejiang in east China and Guangdong in the south through pipelines.

The Zhundong area boasts the largest coal field in China, with estimated coal reserves of 390 billion t and proven reserves of 213.6 billion t.

With the development of new technologies, coal gasification is expected to be a key sector in the country's clean energy initiative. Chinese economic authorities have already approved several large coal gasification projects.
