VIDEO: Liebherr’s ‘extreme machine’

World Coal,

Liebherr manufactures mining excavators that attempt to set the technological trend within the global mining industry. As coal mines around the world expand and look to produce more tonnes at a low cost, the company has built the R 9800, which works as a loading tool for the largest scale operations to achieve challenging production targets.

The R 9800 has been billed as the company’s flagship model, and can be fitted with two different versions of diesel drive systems. Customers can choose between Cummins or MTU as their preferred engine partner. An electronic drive system provides steady performance while working in difficult conditions.

Weighing in at 800 t, the R 9800 is a mighty addition to any coal mining operation. The excavator has a 4000 hp. engine output and a bucket or shovel capacity of 3000 lb/yd3. This ‘extreme machine’ is well-suited to loading ultra-class trucks for upwards of 240 t.

Hervé Schelcher, Product Support at Liebherr, says: “The demand on the market is there for these types of mining excavators. The mines are getting bigger, trucks are getting bigger: everything is getting bigger.”

Liebherr has now released footage of its R 9800 excavators in action, detailing the machine’s performance and level of operator comfort.

All working attachments – whether backhoe bucket or bottom-dump bucket – are designed and manufactured by Liebherr.
