Arch Coal’s operations in West Virginia have been recognized for safety and environmental excellence, earning a total of nine state awards at the annual West Virginia Mining Symposium.

In total the company won five West Virginia Mountaineer Guardian Awards for its safety record at the Pocahontas mine and preparation plant, the Leer preparation plant, the Mountain Laurel Mountaineer II mine and the Sentinal mine.

Four operations also received environmental awards from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection: the Phoenix No. 1 mine, the Sentinal mine, Left Fork opencast mine and the Pine Creek No. 1 mine, which won the West Virginia Good Neighbour Award for its community outreach.

"We commend our West Virginia operations for their keen focus on our core values of operating safely and responsibly," said John W. Eaves, Arch's president and CEO. "These achievements underscore our employees' deep commitment to responsible practices as they strive for continuous improvement each year.
