The governor of West Virginia, Earl Ray Tomblin, has approved a law repealing the state’s controversial 2009 Alternative and Renewable Energy Portfolio Act, which required the state to generate 25% of its electricity from renewables or alternative energy sources (including some coal-based technologies) by 2025.

The newly Republican-controlled state legislature had passed the bill at the end of January.

“This clearly shows how much things have changed in Charleston,” said Bill Raney, president of the West Virginia Coal Association. “And this also shows the commitment our Legislature and our Governor have to taking the steps needed to begin getting our state’s coal miners back to work. This is just the first component of that effort, and already it is easy to see this truly is a new day for our state.“
