Mechel has completed the installation of new coal washing and dewatering technology at its Elga Coal Complex seasoning washing plant. The two Tecnicas Hidraulicas membrane filter presses will enable the facility to filter slime water under pressure and mechanically dewater small coal fractions.

According to the company, the upgradrd facility will help to boost the seasonal washing plant’s end-product capacity by 10% to 2.3 million tpa, as well as reducing its water consumption by 2.5 – 3 times.

Work is now continuing on turning the washing plant from a seasonal to an all-year operation with the project expected to be completed in October/November. This will boost the plant’s capacity further to 2.7 million tpa.

“Construction of Elga Coal Complex’s facilities is being conducted exclusively with the use of state-of-the-art technologies that will enable us to make the Elga project one of global leaders by its cost efficiency and profit,” Mechel CEO, Oleg Korzhov, said. “Besides, we make maximum effort to increase the quality of our coal products, which is, in our conviction, the project’s trademark.”
