Indian port looks to end manual coal handling within three years

The chairman of the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), P. C. Parida, has vowed to put an end to the manual handling of coal within the next three years.

Coal vessels at the New Mangalore Port in India are currently often loaded and unloaded by hand – posing health and safety risks to workers and also slowing operations down. Through developing automation and mechanisation, Parida believes this old-fashioned approach to coal handling can be modernised. He said that the NMPT was in the process of mechanising all unloading and loading activities.

Parida said that complete mechanisation is one of several developmental works being taken up at the port. The NMPT “is committed to ensuring cleaner and greener environment” he said.

According to The Hindu, two new berths – berth nos. 18 and 19 – would be in place within a year. The NMPT is also planning to deepen the draft of the port, from 14 m to 18 – 20 m.

Extending the draft of the port would allow terminals to handle more cargo, Parida said.

Five more harbour cranes, including three from private industry players, are also set to be deployed in handling containers at the port.

Parida also said he hoped to build a business development park within the port’s premises. This park would provide accommodation to all port users.

The NMPT is also reportedly in the process of increasing storage capacity for both liquid and bulk solid goods.
