SUEK signs environment cooperation agreement

On 21 November, agreements between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, Federal Service for Oversight of Natural Resource Use, JSC Siberian Coal Energy Co. JSC (SUEK) and two regions where SUEK operates were signed in Moscow. The agreements are associated with 2017, which has been proclaimed the year of the environment in Russia.

As indicated in the document, the total investment in environmental actions at SUEK operations in Krasnoyarsk region in 2017 will exceed RUB 110 million. These funds will be aimed at reducing and monitoring of hazardous emissions, wastewater treatment, and purchase of new equipment for environmental control laboratories.

RUB 41 million will be committed to funding environmental actions at Tugnuy mining cluster in the Republic of Buryatia as well as environmental training and education projects for the inhabitants of the natural area of Lake Baikal.

The agreements were signed as part of the Federal Arctic Forum ‘Arctic Days in Moscow’.

SUEK’s CEO Vladimir Rashevsky reminded that in 2017 the company is going to invest over RUB 3 billion in environmental actions, including those which pertain to the year of the environment: “Coal is going to remain a vital source of energy on our planet for decades to come and at the same time it will be turning into a more efficient and environmentally friendly type of fuel. We at SUEK consider it our duty to do everything we can to preserve favourable environment for future generations. That is why we are implementing an environmental action plan to make sure that our operating activities have as little impact on the environment as possible”.
