BHP Billiton recognises turtle protection project

BHP Billiton announced the winners of its Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) Awards in Melbourne with the Excellence Environment Award going to Lina Báez from BHP Billiton Coal’s Cerrejón joint venture in Colombia.

The winning project works to protect endangered sea turtles through successful local community engagement. The project has led to a preservation agreement for protecting turtles in the Upper Guajira region of Colombia.

Recognising health, safety, environment and community
The HSEC Awards recognise employees who have achieved outstanding results through projects that contribute to the Company’s sustainability objective. They are judged by a panel of experts from resources, government, academia and BHP Billiton.

Recipients of the excellence, highly commended and merit awards received US$ 20,000, US$ 10,000 and US$ 5000 respectively to donate to a not-for-profit organisation of their choice. In total, BHP Billiton will be donating US$ 140,000 to a range of charities globally.
