BHP Billiton donates AU$ 500,000 to relief efforts in the Philippines
In response to the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan, which has affected some 11 million people, mining company BHP Billiton has donated AU$ 500,000 to the Red Cross Typhoon Haiyan Appeal. The donation will be given from BHP Billiton’s sustainable communities charity.
The sustainable communities charity was established by BHP Billiton as part of its community investment programme.
The Typhoon is the biggest recorded tropical storm to make landfall and has led to mass destruction in the Philippines and an international call for aid. Valerie Amos, UN humanitarian chief, said that the situation in the affected towns and cities was desperate, with a lack of supplies meaning residents have been left without food and water for several days.
Mike Henry, BHP Billiton president, HSEC, marketing and technology, said: “The typhoon and its aftermath have had a severe impact on communities in the Philippines and given our history and relationship with the people of the Philippines, we hope this donation will assist the Red Cross in helping the local people in their recovery from this terrible event.”
On top of the AU$ 500,000 donation, BHP Billiton will donate two dollars for every one dollar donated by an employee through its Matched Giving programme.
