New EPA rules expected to hit coal industry hard

World Coal,

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is due to unveil new regulations to limit carbon emissions from new power plants that the industry says would effectively end the construction of new coal-fired power plants.

The new rules, a revision of rules proposed last year, are expected to limit carbon emissions to 1300 – 1600 lb/MWh, according to sources quoted by Reuters. They would also require new plants to include carbon capture and storage (CCS).

Rules to govern emissions from current plants are not scheduled to be released until next year.
