MINExpo 2016: REMSAFE remote isolation system

REMSAFE demonstrated its modular remote isolation system on EATON’s stand at MINExpo 2016 in Las Vegas.
The REMSAFE system enables personnel to isolate and de-energise large mining equipment quickly and safely – reducing downtime. The system comprises to main components: the Failsafe Instrument Cubical (FIC) and Field Isolation Station (FIS).
The FIC is the “brain of the system”. It is the main interface with the equipment, sending receiving and interpreting the information being sent from the plant being isolated and the supply from which it is being isolated. Design of the FIC is modular to accommodate the specific designs of each installation.
The FIS contains the operator interface panel and is located as close to the equipment under control – for example, a conveyor – as possible. The operator interface panel contains the indicators, push buttons and isolator lock-out switch and lock-out flap.
The REMSAFE system allows an operator to isolate a system by pushing just two buttons on the operator interface panel. When isolation is confirmed, the operator can lock-out and perform the necessary work. This removes the need for a specialist HV electrician to be available to undertake the work.
The system is designed to fail to safe. It continually monitors the integrity of the isolation, as well as its own health and status. Its operation is also monitored by the site PLC and reported to the site’s control room.
