The ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) and the World Coal Association (WCA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that formalises their long-term partnership during the ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF) 2017, on the sidelines of the 35th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM).

The AEBF is an international conference and exhibition that is annually organised in conjunction with the AMEM, where Ministers from 10 ASEAN Member States and related ASEAN energy entities including the ASEAN Forum on Coal (AFOC) present.

This partnership will support AFOC in promoting the development and utilisation of cleaner coal technologies (CCT), with the aim to fulfil ASEAN’s vision as stipulated in the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2016 – 2025. In line with APAEC 2016 – 2025’s theme ‘Enhancing Energy Connectivity and Market Integration in ASEAN to Achieve Energy Security, Accessibility, Affordability and Sustainability for All’, AFOC works to enhance the image of coal through the promotion of CCT.

Dr Sanjayan Velautham, ACE Executive Director, said: “We are pleased to formally sign this entry into partnership with the WCA. From our latest study, the 5th ASEAN Energy Outlook (AEO5), coal will continue to be part of ASEAN’s energy supply for the foreseeable future. That is why it is important that CCT is part of ASEAN’s energy mix going forward. ACE looks forward to working with WCA to achieve this objective.”

WCA CEO Benjamin Sporton noted that “By keeping coal in the energy mix and supporting technologies that reduce emissions, we will be making energy affordable and striving to reduce emissions at the same time, which is in-line with the Paris Agreement commitments. WCA will work closely with ACE to demonstrate the role of coal in achieving universal energy access and reducing emissions in-line with the Paris Agreement commitments.”
