DOE seeking information on improving coal-fired power plants

The US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy (FE) has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for input on improving the efficiency, reliability and flexibility of existing coal-fired power plants.
The objective of this RFI is to support DOE’s mission to lead research and technology development that promotes the advancement of coal-fired power plants that provide stable power generation with operational flexibility, high efficiency and low emissions.
This RFI seeks stakeholder input about research and development activities that could lead to wide-scale retrofits of existing coal-fuelled electricity generating units (EGUs). Specifically, DOE is interested in gathering information relevant to three technical areas:
- Advanced technologies for efficiency improvements at full and/or part load operations.
- Advanced technologies for Improvements to EGU reliability, availability and maintainability.
- Advanced technologies for improved operational flexibility.
Responses to this RFI must be submitted electronically to DE-FOA-0001937@netl.doe.gov with the subject line "DE-FOA-0001937 – RFI" no later than 8:00pm (ET) on 18 June 2018. Information from this RFI will complement other public feedback being sought by FE, including RFIs on small-scale modular coal plants of the future, and performance improvements for steam-based power cycles for coal boilers.
