Bangladesh to build coal-fired power plant

North West Power Generation Company Limited (NWPGCL), the Bangladeshi power company, has signed a MoU with China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CMC) to build a coal-fired power plant.

Ultra super-critical

The ultra super-critical coal power plant will have a capacity to generate 1320 MW of electricity. It will be built in Kalapara upazila, Patuakhali, at an estimated cost of US$ 2 billion, according to reports from Dhaka Tribune.

NWPGCL is required to implement 3490 MW of power under a government plan, which covers the construction of a series of coal-fired power projects for the generation of a total 20 000 MW of electricity by 2030.

Electricity targets

NWPGCL managing director, A M Khurshedul Alam, reportedly commented: "To achieve the target, the company has taken a plan to install 2640 MW ultra super-critical coal based power plant in joint venture."

To date, NWPGCL has set up two power plants in Bangladesh, the 150MW Sirajganj power plant and the 150MW Khulna power plant.
