K-Electric to build coal-fired power plant

World Coal,

K-Electric (KE), formerly Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC), announced its plans to set up a 660 MW green field coal-fired power plant, on the basis of Built Operate and Transfer.

The project is to be the first of its kind in Pakistan. KE signed a memorandum of understanding with Harbin Electric International (HEI) for the power plant.

The MoU is for the co-development of the 660MW green field coal-fired power plant, according to a company statement. KE added that the project will be developed, constructed and operated on a Built Operate and Transfer basis, which will be the first project of its kind in Pakistan to be conceived by a private utility company.

Power generation

The coal-fired power plant will enhance KE’s generation capability by 660 MW. KE and HEI will also jointly work towards the financial close of this project, the statement said.

“This nexus between KE and HEI will not only open doors for new foreign investment in the country but will actually pioneer KE in delivering the green field coal-fired plant,” a company official commented.

The plant will be operated and maintained by the HEI for a limited time and will be then transferred to K-Electric.
