Alstom wins contract to renovate steam turbines in India

The Gujarat State Electricity Corp. has awarded Alstom Power Services a contract to renovate two steam turbines at the Ukai and Wanakbori thermal power plants in Gujarat India. The contract is worth Rs. 2.07 crores (€26.6 million). It is projected to be commissioned in 2017.

The renovation will encompass engineering, supply, erection, commissioning and testing.

Alstom will carry out full shaftline retrofits of the 200 MW BHEL-supplied LMZ design steam turbines at unit 4 of the 1350 MW Ukai power plant and unit 3 of the 1470 MW Wanakbori power plant. This will improve turbine efficiency by approximately 14% and subsequently reduce coal consumption and CO₂ emissions.

Improving efficiency of aging coal power plants not only boosts the competitiveness of these units, but because coal is the largest fuel in India, is also key to limiting climate change."
