The World Coal Association (WCA) has appointed Glenn Kellow, President and Chief Executive Officer of Peabody, as Chairman. The WCA Board confirmed the appointment at its Annual General Meeting in Washington DC on 17 May.

Glenn Kellow has over 30 years’ experience in the global resources industry. He joined Peabody in September 2013 and in 2015 was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer. Kellow has held chief executive leadership, operating or financial roles in global businesses in coal, copper, nickel, aluminium, steel, oil and gas.

Kellow replaces Mick Buffier of Glencore whose term as WCA Chairman came to an end in May.

Welcoming Kellow, WCA Chief Executive, Benjamin Sporton said: “This is an exciting time for the WCA. I am confident that with Glenn as Chair we will continue to demonstrate coal’s role as a vital strategic resource and further enhance our advocacy for low emission coal technologies. Glenn is an experienced industry leader, with a deep understanding of the coal industry. He has all the qualities to help lead WCA to its next stage of development.”

Kellow said: “It is a privilege to be appointed to chair the WCA Board. I’d like to thank Mick Buffier for his years of service and I look forward to working with the global industry as we approach the challenges and opportunities ahead. The WCA has a vital role to play in deepening understanding of the role coal plays in the global energy mix and supporting greater use of advanced coal technologies, including today’s high efficiency, low emissions coal-fuelled generation technologies and carbon capture, use and storage.”
