Coal-fired power project in Thar is approved

Pakistan’s Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB) has approved Shanghai Electric Group Co. to construct the Thar coal-fired power project. The project will be able to generate of 1400 MW ¬from four 350 MW units. It is anticipated to commence generation in 2017 – 2018.
The board approved the signing of a memorandum of understanding between PPIB, China Three Gorges Corp. and Silk Road Fund for development of private hydropower projects in Pakistan.
The board also granted approval for issuance of letter of support to a 150 MW coal-fired power project at Arifwala, a 1200 MW coal-fired project at Sahiwal, a 1320 MW imported coal-fired projects at Port Qasim and a 1320 MW imported coal-fired projects at Hub, Balochistan.
