World Coal Association Chairman, Mick Buffier, attended the G20 Conference on Energy Access in Sub-Saharan Africa on 1 October 2015, speaking at following B20 Energy Forum. The B20 Coalition is a group of independent business associations from the G20 economies.
“Let’s be clear, we cannot meet the world’s growing energy needs, tackle energy poverty and reduce global emissions withouth utilizing all energy options,” Buffier, who is also Group Executive at Glencore’s coal business, said in his talk. “We therefore need greater deployment of all low-emission technologies, including high-efficiency low-emissions (HELE) coal technologies and carbon capture and storage.”
Buffier also called for global leaders to recognise the vital role that coal plays in many countries – in particular many developing countries. “We need a genuine commitment from governments to support all low emission technologies equally,” concluded Buffier. “Only then will we make meaningful steps towards not only a low emission future but one where we have achieved global access to energy.”
