Vostochny opencast mine sets new overburden record

World Coal,

Record volumes of overburden were produced in May at the Vostochny opencast mine (Chitaugol), a subsidiary of the Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK). Setting a new record, a monthly total of 840 000 m3 of overburden was hauled to the dump.

The record performance was primarily achieved as a result of improved haulage dynamics. The previous record was achieved in March, when BelAZ dump trucks hauled a total of 615 000 m3 of rock. An improvement of almost 18% on this indicator was realised in May.

The head of the Vostochny opencast mine, Alexander Chernov, highlighted that the improvements in haulage efficiency would not have been possible without a SUEK investment programme targeting improvements in machinery and equipment. In 2017 alone, the open pit received three 130 t BelAZ-75131 dump trucks, which were commissioned in late February.

In recent years, as part of SUEK’s investment programme, around 30 types of new equipment were introduced across SUEK companies in the Transbaikal region. Among these, five BelAZ-75131 dump trucks, a front loader, a bulldozer, two buses for the transportation of personnel, and a mobile canteen were put into operation at the Vostochny opencast, while the Kharanorsky open pit received 14 Scania and Volvo dump trucks, three BelAZ trucks, a KamAZ truck, a mobile vehicle repair shop and a grader.

Another bulldozer and a mobile vehicle repair shop are expected to be delivered to the Vostochny opencast before the end of the year.
