New Queensland coal exploration permit awarded to Vitrinite

The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) has welcomed the announcement that Vitrinite has been awarded the preferred tenderer for a coal exploration permit on land near Clermont.

Queensland Mines Minister Dr. Anthony Lynham has announced that Vitrinite would have the opportunity to apply for an exploration permit over 35 km² of land.

QRC Chief Executive Ian Macfarlane said the exploration project would be an important new addition to Queensland’s coal industry.

“Queensland is blessed with a diverse resources sector and has so many of the commodities that are necessary for our modern society – including coal,” Macfarlane said.

“Just last week QRC reaffirmed the importance of ongoing exploration to lock in long-term benefits from our world-leading resources sector, so it is reassuring to see another step taken to uncover the next projects which lead to ongoing jobs.

“Regional communities in Central and North Queensland rely on the resources sector as a source of well-paid, long-term jobs.

“Recent data from the ABS showed exploration is up across a range of commodities, including in coal, which continues to underwrite our economy.

“The most up to date trade data showed Queensland exports were worth AUS$87.2 billion over the year to July 2019. Resources exports make up about 80% of that value.

“Queensland can deliver more economic returns from resources given our substantial mineral prospectivity and a skilled workforce based in key regional centres alongside a network of supporting service industries.

“The QRC is keen to work with the Queensland Government on new incentives for exploration and resources development to make the most of our opportunities.

“Ongoing investment in exploration is the first step in reaping returns through more jobs, more investment in regional communities and more royalty taxes in the years ahead.

“All resources projects undergo rigorous assessment to ensure the industry can continue in a way that is environmentally sustainable and delivers the best returns for the regions that create the wealth.”
