Further strikes at BHP’s Australian coal mines
Workers at a metallurgical coal mine in Australia have decided on industrial action in an ongoing pay dispute.
The Dendrobium mine in New South Wales is operated by Illawarra Coal, a subsidiary of BHP Billiton. Supervisors at the mine will walk out for two day in mid-January (Friday 11 and Monday 14 January) after talks with the company fell apart.
The Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers Australia, the union representing some of the workers at the Dendrobium mine, is seeking an increase in the vase rate of pay for supervisors. The workers involved in the strike are also continuing a ban on working unscheduled overtime.
According to Margaret Buchanan, a spokesperson for the union, negotiation between the miners and Illawarra Coal have been going on for five months.
Around 50 supervisors at the nearby Appin coal mine, which is also operated by Illawarra Coal, staged a two week strike in November to increase base pay. The dispute is still unsettled.
