Colombian mining giant, Cerrejón, has joined the World Coal Association (WCA). Cerrejón is the second member to join the WCA this year, and becomes part of a strong, global network of major coal producers and national associations working to demonstrate the role coal plays in a sustainable energy future.

The company’s mine covers 69 000 ha. of the La Guajíra peninsula in the northeast of Colombia, making it the largest open-cast coal mine in the world, with annual production set to increase to 60 million t this year (2017).

President of Cerrejón Roberto Junguito said: “It is very important that Cerrejón is a member of the WCA which is the global industry network. As an important player in the Colombian economy and a key economic actor in La Guajira, the region where our production activity takes place, we are looking forward to leveraging our partnership with the WCA to ensure global energy security while meeting environmental commitments”.

Welcoming Cerrejón, Benjamin Sporton, WCA’s Chief Executive, said:  “I’m proud to welcome Cerrejón into our membership. We look forward to working with them on a range of issues including our shared goal of positioning coal as a key contributor to sustainable development. As the only body acting internationally on behalf of coal, I believe the WCA and Cerrejón can work together to remind policy makers of the important role coal plays in socio-economic development.”

Colombia has the largest coal reserves in Latin America and is one of the largest coal producers in the world.
