VIDEO: Caterpillar machines hit the beach

World Coal,

What do you get when you set a fleet of Cat® equipment and a team of talented operators and sculptors loose in a giant sandbox? A work of art, a world record – and proof that with enough power and precision, you can build anything you imagine.

“Sand Castle” is the latest in the Built For It™ Trials, a series of Caterpillar short films. The video captures the action as two Cat hydraulic excavators, a wheel loader and two mini excavators transform 734 m3 of sand into the world’s tallest sand castle.

Construction of the castle, which was made exclusively of quarry sand and water, began on 28 October in the Caminho Niemeyer square in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Over the course of 15 days, trucks delivered 49 loads of sand to the site, where seven machine operators and seven sculptors carefully shifted and shaped it into a towering work of art.

By 11 November, construction was complete. A representative from Guinness World Records was on hand to take final measurements and confirmed that at 12.59 m (41 ft, 3.67 in.), the Caterpillar sand castle was the new world record holder, topping the previous record of 11.63 m (38 ft, 2 in.).
