Thuringowa State High School (SHS) has been recognised by the Queensland Government for its outstanding work with industry by winning the Showcase Award for Excellence in Industry Partnerships for its Global Tropics Futures Program.

Queensland Resources Council (QRC) Chief Executive Ian Macfarlane said the school was committed to working alongside industry to help students in North Queensland.

“I congratulate Thuringowa on this important recognition. In collaboration with James Cook University, they have demonstrated their capacity to work with industry and encourage all students to embrace science, technology, engineering and maths,” Macfarlane said.

The Townsville high school is part of the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA), which is the education arm of the QRC.

“The school has always been very proactive with the QMEA with students participating in educational events attended by resource professionals who guide them through STEM related projects,” Macfarlane explained.

Through the QMEA, the school worked with Downer professionals to deliver a 10 week Mining Grand Challenge, which was a masterclass in mining innovation and part of the Global Tropics Futures Program.

“Downer was most impressed with the innovative solutions that students came up with as part of the Mining Grand Challenge, such as a magnetic track to transport the coal, a helmet with a range of sensors to ensure the miners are safe and easily contacted and a wristband that measures their health while underground,” said Clare Hudson, Downer’s General Manager – People, Standards and Capability.

Other QMEA sponsors South32, Adani and Glencore Technologies provided valuable mentoring support to students to assist them in seeing the project through to the end.

“We are very humbled and honoured to achieve this award, which is testament to the fantastic work of all involved, teachers, industry and of course our wonderful students,” said Thuringowa SHS Principal Grant Dale.
