Mongolian coal transport link complete
SouthGobi Resources has completed a paved coal haulage road from its flagship Ovoot Tolgoi mine in Mongolia, with a capacity in excess of 20 million tpa.
The firm said building the road was a key objective for 2014, with the infrastructure increasing the efficiency of its coal transportation operations and reducing their environmental impact.
Ovoot Tolgoi is located 40 km from the China-Mongolia border. It produced 3.06 million t of premium semi-soft, semi-soft and thermal coal in 2013, but SouthGobi cut back production in June to satisfy contracted volumes only. The company produced 550,000 t of raw coal in Q2 2014, comprising 400,000 t of semi-soft metallurgical coal sales and 150,000 t of thermal coal sales but no premium semi-soft sales.
