India's November coal imports drop

World Coal,

Indian ship broker, Interocean, has released data that suggests India’s coal imports at major ports in November dropped by 2% from October, to around 12.7 million t for the month.

In October, India imported around 13 million t of coal.

Metallurgical coal accounted for 1.7 million t of the November import total, which was down by 43% compared to 3 million t in October. Thermal coal imports rose by 10% from October, but this was not enough to offset the sharp drop in metallurgical coal.

The highest volume of coal import shipments was received by the Mundra port on India’s west coast. In November, the port received around 2.4 million t of coal, down 7.6% on October figures. The majority of metallurgical coal imports were received by Goa port, with a total of 810,706 t of coal – a rise of 4% from October, according to Interocean data.

Interocean surveyed the ports of Kandla, Navlakhi, Mundra, Bhavnagar, Pipavav, Bedi, Magdalla, Dajeh, Dharamtar, Haji Bunder, Jaigarh, Goa, Mangalore, Tuticorin, Ennore, Karaikal, Krishnapatnam, Kakinada, Gangavaram, Vizag, Paradip and Haldia.

India’s coal was primarily sourced in Indonesia, South Africa and Australia. Adani Enterprises, Bhatia Global, Agarwal Coal, JSW Group, Coastal Energen and Steel Authority of India Ltd were the main importers.
