Thermal coal stocks at Indian power plants drop
The total combined stocks of thermal coal at power plants in India have fallen to just above 19 million t, their lowest since June, according to data from the Indian Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
Combined stock levels at 99 Indian plants subsided to 19.01 million t on October 9, down 14% from a month earlier.
Inventories reached a record 10-year high of 23.33 million t on August 22.
A number of sources have said that the monsoon season lowered power demand from India’s agricultural sector, while hydropower generation increased at the expense of coal-fired power generation.
However, Indian thermal coal stocks are 145% higher than last year, and almost twice the level of 2011 stocks. The latest figure includes 1.12 million t of imported coal.
The number of Indian power plants running on less than a week’s supply of coal at any one time has risen to 19 from 12 a month earlier. The CEA data also revealed that of these power plants, 14 had inventories lasting less than four days of thermal coal consumption, up from a total of three last month.
