As Port Waratah Coal Services achieved new operational performance records throughout 2018, the company has confirmed its commitment to social, environmental and economic issues as well as performance. These results were published on 29 March, in Port Waratah’s 2018 Sustainable Development Report.
With a theme of ‘local heart, global reach’, the report describes how the company introduced new mobile technology to strengthen the safety of its employees and delivered several significant environmental infrastructure projects while achieving various shiploading records.
It also demonstrates Port Waratah’s indirect contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs), explaining how its Community Investment & Partnership Programme supports their achievement.
“We connect the Hunter Valley coal chain to the rest of the world, and sustainability considerations are integrated into our daily operations,” said Chief Executive Officer Hennie du Plooy.
“We have a culture of shared responsibility and accountability, and last year we all achieved a lot in terms of sustainability.
“Last year we mapped our operations against the SDGs, but all of our partners do amazing things for our local community and environment. We wanted to better understand how our support helps them contribute to the achievement of the global goals. We all share a desire for a sustainable community, and we are incredibly proud to play a role in enabling this great work to happen,” he said.
As with the last two reports, Port Waratah has prepared its 2018 report in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative’s Standards.
Port Waratah operates at two sites in Newcastle, in Carrington and Kooragang. It services a far-reaching customer base, almost 95% located in Asia.
