Paringa completes technical development work

Paringa Resources has completed the mine development technical work at its proposed Poplar Grove mine in Kentucky, US. Formerly known as Buck Creek No.2 mine, the planned mine will produce 1.8 million tpy of thermal coal.

Following the completion of the technical work, the bankable feasibility study (BFS) is on track for completion over the coming months with construction anticipated to begin in early 2017.

Poplar Grove mine will work the same Western Kentucky No.9 (WK No.9) coal seam, using the same mining methods and similar coal processing techniques, as neighbouring mines. Operated by Alliance Resource Partners, these mines are among the most productive room-and-pillar mines in the US.

“The WK No.9 coal seam as been mined in this region for over 100 years,” said Paringa’s President and CEO, David Gay. This history is “one of the key strengths of the Buck Creek Complex,” Gay continued, as it allows Paringa to draw on a wealth of experience in bringing the mine and the adjacent Cypress mine into production.

“For these reasons, the development, construction and execution risks in building the Poplar Grove and Cypress mines are extremely low relative to other undeveloped projects in the natural resources sector,” concluded Gay.

Under the mine plan, coal will be accessed via a combination of box cut and drifts for ventilation, transport of personnel, materials and ROM coal.

Coal will be produced using four continuous miners and four roof bolters working two continuous miner supersection units. In each supersection, four battery haulers will transport coal from the face to a feeder breaker.

A coal preparation plant with a nominal capacity of 400 short tph will process the coal. The plant has been designed to allow a portion of the -0.5 in. ROM coal to bypass the plant and be blended back into the clean coal to produce a higher yield. The plant will run for 250 days a year.
