Adani awards Downer EDI AUS$2 billion coal mine contract

Adani Mining has awarded Downer EDI an AUS$2 billion contract for the construction of mine infrastructure, as well as the provision of other mining services, at the Carmichael coal project in Queensland’s Galilee Basin.

Downer reported that it received two letters of awards from Adani.

The contracts are set to run for seven years and are subject to the companies executing binding contracts.

Construction of the mine is set to commence later this year, with first coal slated in 2017.

The Carmichael project holds more than 11 billion t of thermal coal and Adani Mining CEO, Jeyakumar Janakaraj, said it will create 10 000 jobs and hand AUS$22 billion to the state government in taxes and royalties.

Despite opposition from environmental groups, which have taken Adani to court in order to stop its construction, the Carmichael mine, which was approved in July, will produce 60 million tpy for 60 years.
