Dr Albert Obanor, an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Benin, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to revive the Nigerian coal industry in order to increase power supply and end erratic power supply.
He indicated that the high dependence on natural gas – 20 out 23 power plants are fired by natural gas in Nigeria – would only be reduced if the coal industry was given opportunity to revive.
The academic also urged Buhari to encourage independent power producers to source energy from other sources, such as water, solar and biomass, to reduce over reliance on gas.
Obanor indicated he was against the cancellation of the privatisation of the power sector, stating that government should instead re-assess and re-tune it for optimal performance.
