500 MW power plant to be constructed in Enugu

World Coal,

Nigerian firm One Nation Energy Platform has announced a plan to construct a 500 MW coal-fired power plant in Enugu, in conjunction with a South African technical partner – Stefanutti.

The company has already signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Federal Ministry of Power, intended to fast track the construction of the plant.

Company Chairman Uzoma Obiyo has indicated that measures have been put in place to ensure that the project overcomes environmental challenges, noting that the firm has the required technology for clean energy.

Obiyo additionally noted that with coal power the company will succeed in eliminating the challenges of vandalism that currently face the energy sector in the country: “Coal should be a critical source of our power generation because, unlike gas which has been our main source of power generation, the Federal Government and private sector, will not have to expand scarce resources on pipelines protection and repairs nor will we be at the mercy of the national oil companies for gas supply”.

Once the plant is completed, the firm will market power to its customers in accordance with the electricity tariff that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has already put in place.
