Riversdale confirm that the Zambeze coal project will produce hard coking coal

Riversdale Mining Ltd has confirmed that its Zambeze coal project, Mozambique, will produce hard coking coal.

The announcement follows the results of the first coke tests conducted at the site. The Zambeze coke produced coke strength after reaction (CSR) results that ranged between 67 – 73, verifying the hard coking coal potential of the project.

The results come from two coal seams that will make up over half of Zambeze’s production for the first 30 years of mine life. The company announced in a statement that further test work was necessary in order to consolidate the findings.

Following the results, Riversdale’s managing director, Steve Mallyon, said: “Zambeze’s high coke strength, combined with its massive 9 billion t coal resource, confirms Zambeze’s potential to be a tier 1 hard coking coal operation.”

The remaining productive seams are expected to undergo coke tests in Q1 2011, during the early stages of the Zambeze Definitive Feasibility Study. The company announced that an assessment of the seams indicates that, on average, they will produce coke of comparable strength to the two seams that have already been tested.

The company expects to complete a pre-feasibility study for the project in Q4 2010. Initial production from the project is estimated to commence in 2014.
