Jindal opens headquarters in Johannesberg

Indian conglomerate, Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL), has officially opened its new Jindal Africa headquaters in Johannesburg, South Africa, the company said in a recent statement. The company has been operating in South Africa for five years and it hopes the new office will “create a springboard for its penetration into other southern African countries”.

“We’ve spent the last five years determining Africa’s needs and now the stage is set for us to take the next frogleap and expand our footprint,” said Ravi Uppal, CEO and managing director of Jindal Steel & Power.

JSPL, which reported and operating profit of US$ 18 billion in 2012/13, first entered the South African minerals sector in 2008 with the purchase of the mothballed Kiepersol coal mine in KwaZulu-Natal. This mine is now producing around 1.5 million tpa of anthracite for steel makers, including ArcelorMittal South Africa, Samancor and Evraz Highveld Steel & Vanadium.

Beyond South Africa: developing coal in Mozambique and Botswana
The company is now also operating in Mozambique, where is has started development of the Chirdoze coal mine in the Moatize district. The mine currently produces 3 million tpa with plans to increase this to 10 million t on a coal reserve of 700 million t.

In addition, the company has outlined an infrastructure project to enable the transport of coal from the mine to the Power of Beira either via a rail line or coal slurry pipeline. “The prefeasibility studies for both of these options have been completed and we will advance on of these two alternative,” said Ashish Kumar, CEO of Jindal Africa.

JSPL has also received environmental impact assessment approval for the construction of power plants in Mozambique able to produce up to 350 MW.

Mozambique is not the only area of expansion for JSPL: the company is also advancing a coal project in the Mmamabula coalfield in Botswana, which boasts coal reserves of 2.7 billion t. A mining licence application has been submitted and discussions around the potential for the mine to supply energy for the South African Development Community were ongoing.
