Zimbabwe colliery to sell coal to Glencore

World Coal,

Zimbabwe coal producer Hwange Colliery Co. is negotiating to supply coal and coke to Glencore.

Managing Director Thomas Makore said: “Discussions are happening right now with Glencore to supply coal and coke and we want to reach a conclusion by the end of this month.

“Exports would then start thereafter. What motivated us to talk to Glencore is that they are a very big coal supplier and producer and it made sense to engage them”.

Quantities have not yet been disclosed.

Hwange currently produces approximately 300 000 t/month of coal. However, output is likely to increase in May, when the company expects to commission new mining equipment on the back of US$33 million in loans from the Central Bank and India Export and Import Bank.

The company is the biggest supplier to state-owned electricity producer Zimbabwe Power Company, and also exports approximately 5000 t/month of coal to South Africa, where it is used to make steel.
