World Coal,

BHP Billiton's metallurgical coal production increased by 14% to a record 38 million t, according to the company's latest production report. Production for the 2015 fiscal year is now expected to be 49 million t, 4% higher than prior guidance.

At Queensland Coal, record production and sales volumes reflected the successful ramp-up of the Caval Ridge mine and sustained improvements in truck and wash-plant utilisation across the operations. Production declined by 13% from 4Q14 as a result of a longwall move at Crinum and wet weather.

Illawarra Coal achieved record production of 6.5 million t as maintenance efficiencies supported higher equipment utilisation rates. Longwall moves at Dendrobium and West Cliff led to a 25% decrease in volumes during 1Q15.

BHP Billiton Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Mackenzie, stated, “our teams continue to exceed expectations and deliver strong operating performance. Our commitment to sustainably improve productivity and lower costs is helping mitigate the impact of subdued commodity prices and supporting returns for our shareholders".

Thermal coal production, increased by 2% to 56 million t. Guidance for the 2015 financial year remains unchanged at 73 million t. South Africa Energy Coal production increased by 15% and reflected improved equipment utilisation and optimised mine planning. This was partially offset by lower production at Cerrejón as a result of drought conditions and the need to manage dust emissions, and lower customer demand for our Navajo Coal product.
