A major milestone for a proposed above-ground coal gasification facility in Gladstone is testament to the diversity of the resources sector and its ability to generate new long-term jobs.

Queensland Resources Council Chief Executive Ian Macfarlane said the Co-ordinator General’s declaration of Co-ordinated Project status for Australian Future Energy’s Gladstone Energy and Ammonia project was good news for Central Queensland.

“The Queensland resources industry is far and away our state’s biggest earner and best job creator,” Macfarlane said.

“The planned Gladstone Energy and Ammonia project is yet another way we can make full use of our resources to deliver jobs for Queenslanders and investment for regional communities.

“The declaration from the Co-ordinator General means assessments and approvals can be streamlined to deliver the jobs and the project faster.”

Australian Future Energy says the proposed project will use low quality coal to produce ammonia product and importantly, it will deliver up to 8 PJ of gas to the domestic market.

“There’s more to the resources industry than just one type of project or one type of mine. Our sector is diverse, it’s innovative, and it’s essential for Queensland’s future,” Macfarlane said.

“Recent ABS data shows the resources sector has created more than 10 000 jobs over the last year – and there’s more to come.

“This project will mean up to 1000 local jobs during construction and up to 250 jobs during the 30 year life of the facility.

“The resources sector is already a significant employer in the Gladstone local government area, employing more than 11 000 people both directly and in spin-off jobs. That adds up to AUS$1.9 billion for the local economy.

“Queensland can continue to lead the nation in both resources and energy projects with a stable regulatory environment that attracts new investments.

“As the Federal Government’s Resources 2030 Taskforce outlined in a report released today, Australia should focus on continuing to ensure our resources sector is world-class and delivers direct benefits to our regions. This project would deliver on both.”
