On 17 April, The American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE) announced its support for Senator Joe Manchin’s ‘Energy Reliability Act of 2018’, which would establish a five year tax credit to offset a portion of the operations and maintenance expenses incurred by coal-fueled power plants.
Senator Manchin’s bill is similar to bills introduced by Representative Larry Bucshon and Senator Shelley Moore Capito. ACCCE issued the following statement by Paul Bailey, President and CEO.
“We are grateful to Senator Manchin for introducing legislation that will reduce premature coal retirements,” Bailey said. “This legislation is necessary to help safeguard the electricity grid which is becoming less reliable and less resilient as coal-fueled generating units continue to retire.”
Bailey concluded: “The coal fleet provides fuel security and helps ensure fuel diversity, two of the best insurance policies we have against unforeseen threats to the grid. We look forward to working with Senator Manchin and other supporters to enact this temporary tax credit.”
