Coal industry welcome nomination of Zinke

The Ohio Coal Association has welcomes the nomination of Ryan Zinke to the post of Interior Secretary. Zinke currently represents the coal-rich state of Montana in the US House of Representatives and formerly served as a US Navy SEAL.

The Department of the Interior administers the vast tracts land owned by the federal government, including much of the Powder River Basin (PRB). In January, the department paused the approval of new coal leasing on federal lands pending potential reform of the federal coal programme.

The nomination of Zinke “rounds out a brilliant cast of energy related appointees,” said President of the Ohio Coal Association, Christian Palich. President-elect Donald Trump has also nominated former Texas Governor Rick Perry as Energy Secretary and Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.

“Each of these selections are outspoken critics of the most damaging Obama era regulations facing the industry today and understand the vital role coal plays in generating affordable, reliable energy,” Palich continued. “Together these agencies will create a common sense regulatory environment that levels the playing field and works with the coal industry, not against it.”
