American Coal Council COP21 statement

The American Coal Council has released a statement on COP21, commenting on the ‘inability to obtain binding commitments on greenhouse gases’, which the Council states ‘underscores deep concerns about the severe economic impacts of changing how people around the world would get and use energy.’

Commenting on the huge cost that comes with re-engineering electric systems to reduce emissions, the Council stated that this fee is not one which ‘other nations are eager to emulate, and here at home the CPP lacks congressional support and already faces legal challenges by 27 of the 47 affected states.’

Suggestions to leave fossil fuels in the ground, the release remarked, are unrealistic with regards to the modern day’s energy needs. Instead, companies and governments should ‘develop and deploy technologies for lowering emissions.’

Following the statement, The American Coal Council called upon the US administration and other global leaders to use the Paris accord as the foundation to support advanced high efficiency, low emissions (HELE) technologies for coal power plants as well as to accelerate the development of carbon capture and storage technology. Indeed, the Council believes that a low emissions future for the world is impossible without such support.
