Mining Association of BC congratulates international mine rescue team

World Coal,

The Mining Association of BC, Bristish Columbia, Vancouver, congratulates the international team of mine rescue workers that successfully rescued all 33 miners trapped underground since 5 August at the San Jose copper and gold mine in Copiapo, Chile.

“Technology, skill, experience and perseverance rescued mine workers from a situation without precedent,” said Pierre Gratton, President and CEO of the Mining Association of BC. “The world watched, hoped and was rewarded with a successful outcome for which we are all grateful. We wish the rescued workers a speedy return to good health, and a long and happy future with their families,” he added.

MABC recognises the mining experts, geologists and engineers that worked tirelessly to pull off the only rescue of this magnitude in the history of underground mining. There have been significant advances in drilling technology over the last decade, and the best international technology and equipment helped make the rescue effort successful. Among those who contributed were at least two Canadian companies, including Precision Drilling that provided the drilling rig for plan ‘C’, and Atco that provided temporary trailers to support the rescue effort.

“This event is also a reminder to all of us that people are our most valuable resource underground,” added Mr. Gratton, “and it is only through an ongoing commitment to safety and the continued application of best practices throughout the industry that we can make sure mine workers return home safely every day to their families. Today, mining is BC's safest heavy industry, but it takes hard work, diligence and care to be and to remain so.”
