Stanmore Coal has appointed Dan Clifford, current CEO of New Zealand coal miner, Solid Energy, as Managing Director of the company. Clifford will take over from Nick Jorss, who is to transition to the role of Deputy Chairman, a new executive role with a focus on continuing to grow the business.

“Dan and Nick have complementary capabilities that will allow us to capitalise on the significant synergies and mine life options at the Isaac Plains Complex and use it as a stepping stone for further expansion,” said Neville Sneddon, Stanmore’s Chairman.

Stanmore Coal acquired the shuttered Isaac Plains mine last year and has since brought the mine back online and into production of metallurgical coal.

Clifford was appointed CEO of Solid Energy in 2014 and has led efforts to turnaround the company. He has previously worked in South Africa and Australia with experience at major dragline and longwall operations with Glencore, Anglo American and BHP Billiton.

“Dan brings the skills and operational experience to ramp up production at the Isaac Plains Complex,” said Jorss. “It is absolutely the right time for the business to bring in someone of Dan’s caliber and operational experience and I look forward to working with him as we grow Stanmore into a significant independent coking coal business.”
