Peabody plans to extend Australian coal mine

World Coal,

Peabody Energy has lodged an application with the New South Wales government to extend underground operations at its Hunter Valley coal mine.

The application for the Wambo mine near Singleton proposes development of an additional longwall panel for the existing North Wambo underground.

An extra 2 million t of coal would be extracted and the life of the operation extended by six months.

Peabody said while the mine's output and employment levels would remain the same, there'll be a 700,000 t increase in the amount of reject material from the coal preparation plant.

The material would be deposited within open cut voids at the mine in accordance with existing management practices.

Pending approval, Peabody expects to be working the seam from June 2015.
