Beijing to replace coal with natural gas

China’s capital will build four power plants by the end of 2014 to replace coal with natural gas in heating and power generations, according to authorities.

Construction of the power plants is part of Beijing’s efforts to make best use of energy combinations and reduce emissions.

A total of $US 7.79 billion will be invested in four power plants and 40 other related utility projects. The schemes will reduce sulfur dioxide by 10,000 t, provide heating for 100 million m² and generate 7.2 million kW of electricity using natural gas.

Provision of these services has so far been covered by four coal fired power plants, which used a total of 9.2 million t of coal last year. These coal powered plants will cease operation once the new power plants open.

This decision to replace coal with natural gas powered plants is part of Beijing’s promise to reduce coal consumption by 1.3 million t by 2017.
