The Bettercoal Programme has launched its revised ‘Bettercoal Assessment Manual’, after a comprehensive review process.
The manual provides instruction and guidance on the overall assessment process, including how approved assessors conduct a desktop review and site assessment of producers, and how they verify improvement plans.
The updated manual provides better alignment to the organisation’s processes and the Bettercoal Code 2.0, as well as greater clarity on key areas of the assessment process. This includes enhanced guidance on assessment durations, worker interviews, and site sampling.
The review process started in 2022, with an external agency reviewing the manual and providing recommendations on improvements. The Bettercoal Programme’s Technical and Advisory Committee provided oversight on the review and the key changes to the document.
This review and the launch of the updated manual reflects Bettercoal’s commitment to applying a continuous improvement model not only to the producers it assesses, but to its own processes.
